Cannabidoil (CBD) oil is extracted from the resin glands on cannabis (marijuana) buds and flowers, and diluted with another form of oil such as MCT oil. The True Value of CBD Oil
Firstly, it is important to understand that CBD oil will not get you high. The marijuana plant consists of 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. The New Farm Bill
The new Farm Bill in 2018 will affect almost everyone as it has an influence on a variety of topics from food stamps to the expansion of trade protections. The Farm Bill deals with the U.S Department of Agriculture and its programs. The active version of this bill, which was passed in 2014, will be renewed on September 30th.
Here is what you need to know about the new Farm Bill.
- The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be restructured to include a new provision requiring able-bodied adults (that are not responsible for children under the age of 6) to work a minimum of 20 hours/week or lose their benefits of the SNAP program.
- School lunch nutrition standards will be re-evaluated.
- Certain Conservation Programs and Clean Water Act Protections to be cut.
- Rise of pesticides as certain requirements in the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act are removed.
- Extension of the sugar industry protections.
- New export assistance for specialty crops regarding trade protection.
- Broadband in rural areas will be improved.
- The organic industry will include improved production and tracking methods.
Amongst all of these changes, perhaps the most significant is the proposal to legalize industrial hemp.
How Does the New Farm Bill Affect CBD Oil?
The legalities on CBD oil and hemp have been evolving rapidly as their medicinal values are discovered. The Farm Bill 2014 has a section that is titled ‘Legitimacy of Industrial Hemp Research’ which allows for the growing or cultivation of industrial hemp for the purposes “of research conducted under an agricultural pilot program or other agricultural or academic research”. Due to this, at least 23 states have enacted laws that relate directly to industrial hemp. This in turn has resulted in the legal use of CBD oil for medicinal purposes.
Despite this, there are still hurdles to overcome regarding the commercial and medicinal use of hemp and CBD oil respectively such as transportation of the hemp seeds and what exactly constitutes as ‘research’. This often limits the use of hemp and its extracted substances, such as CBD oil, within the state it was grown.
The new Farm Bill includes language that should help clear these legalization hurdles. The hemp plant is still a controlled substance and requires a license to grown as the ‘live seeds’ are still on the controlled substances act. The new Farm Bill promises the chances of crop insurance, approved pesticides (or herbicides) and the ability to get financing.
The passing of senate’s updated version of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, could mean incredible things for CBD oil in order to push both the market and domestic production forward. Nothing has been made final as of yet, and hemp-deprived products, such as CBD oil, may continue to be treated as a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
